This CD contains summaries of twelve years of Catch Effort data.
1. Estimated catch (three excel spreadsheets) - This summary extract shows the fisher’s estimates of their catch, broken down by fishing year (1 October to 30 September), statistical area, fishing method, and species caught. The summary also shows the number of vessels and companies reporting this take, and number of rows of data (in the Catch Effort database) that are relevant to this take. Note that most of New Zealand’s catch effort forms record estimated catch data for only the “top 5 species” caught. Also note that data on tuna and squid catch will be incomplete (because this information is commonly stored only as “processing” data rather than “estimated catch” data).
2. Landing (three excel spreadsheets) - This summary extract shows what happened to the fish that was taken, broken down by fishing year (1 October to 30 September), fishstock, and destination/fate. The summary also shows the number of vessels and companies reporting this take, and number of rows of data (in the Catch Effort database) that are relevant to this take. Note that landings information is typically more accurate than estimated catch information because most landings information is “weighed”, where as most estimated catch information is “eyeball estimates”. Note however that estimated catch data typically has a finer temporal and spatial resolution.
3. Fishing event (excel spreadsheet) - This summary extract shows the number of vessel day’s fished, broken down by fishing year (1 October to 30 September), statistical area and fishing method. If a single vessel fished in more than one statistical area in a day, or used more than one method in a day, it will feature in the count for each statistical area and each method. In those cases where no vessel ID was reported the breakdown has been done by number of days fished for each fishing permit holder.
Within the estimated catch and landings summaries - in those cases where a single row of data was sourced from less than 3 vessels or companies - the take, and number of vessels, and number of companies, data has been withheld.
Be aware that there are many issues that affect the way that you should interpret Catch Effort data. A list of some of these is provided in the Information Interpretation System spreadsheet.
