Customary fishing

Description of data collection system

Kaitiaki are required to report to the Ministry of Fisheries the quantities of fish of different species authorised or taken for customary purposes. The data provided by each kaitiaki is the aggregate catch for each quarter in each fishstock.

Purpose of data collection

To assess the customary catch for sustainability purposes and to ensure that a suitable allowance can be made when setting TACCs.

Coverage of data set

All customary catch and associated authorisations should be recorded in this system. However not all areas are currently covered as kaitiaki have not yet been appointed in all areas, particularly the North Island and the top of the South Island.

Reporting Requirements

Kaitiaki are required under the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998 to complete a Customary Fishing form quarterly.
