Introduction

About this library

This disk contains a library of documents which may be useful when interpreting New Zealand's Catch Effort data for scientific or research purposes. Catch Effort data is information provided by commercial fishers, which describes their catch and fishing effort. In principle Catch Effort data is available for 100% of the commercial fishing that has occurred within New Zealand's 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone since 1990.

The library describes what information is collected, how it is collected and processed, how it is stored in the Catch Effort database and how this data can be obtained. It is intended to help people understand what information is available, how to get access to that information and how to interpret the information that they have received. The intended audience for the library is fisheries scientists and researchers, but it could be useful to anyone interested in New Zealand's commercial fisheries.

The library is provided to you by the Research Data Management group of New Zealand's Ministry of Fisheries. At the time of writing (August 2003) it was envisaged that an updated version of the library would be released yearly. See the contact list for details on how you may obtain the most recent version of the library.

Please note that this library is released as an aid for scientists and researchers. While the Research Data Management group have endeavoured to ensure its accuracy and completeness, some errors and omissions will exist. See the contact list for details on how you may report any errors that you discover, so that we may improve future versions of the library.

The library was designed to run on a 466mhz (or faster) Pentium PC running MS-Word 2000, MS-Excel 2000, Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0, and MS-Internet Explorer 5.

Some of the documents in this library require the Adobe Acrobat Reader software. If you do not have this software you can download it for free from the Internet using the following link - Adobe Acrobat Reader
